Au Canada atlantique, l\u2019\u00e9rosion c\u00f4ti\u00e8re est due \u00e0 l\u2019action des vagues et, dans une moindre mesure, \u00e0 l\u2019action des mar\u00e9es, au vent, aux ondes de temp\u00eate, \u00e0 la glace, \u00e0 la pluie et au ruissellement de surface.<\/p>\n<p>Les taux d\u2019\u00e9rosion et de d\u00e9p\u00f4t sont diff\u00e9rents \u00e0 divers endroits sur la c\u00f4te. Des facteurs tels que l\u2019exposition et les mar\u00e9es peuvent influencer le degr\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9rosion d\u2019un littoral. Le type de littoral ainsi que le type de s\u00e9diments dont il est compos\u00e9 ont \u00e9galement une influence : les falaises, les plages, les cordons littoraux et les marais sal\u00e9s r\u00e9sistent \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9rosion \u00e0 des degr\u00e9s divers.<\/p>\n<p>Les changements dans les conditions climatiques et le niveau de la mer ont \u00e9galement une incidence sur les taux d\u2019\u00e9rosion et de d\u00e9p\u00f4t. Les activit\u00e9s humaines peuvent \u00e9galement influer sur les taux de modification des c\u00f4tes. On s\u2019attend \u00e0 ce que les changements climatiques entra\u00eenent une \u00e9l\u00e9vation du niveau de la mer et une r\u00e9duction de la glace de mer, ce qui augmentera probablement les taux d\u2019\u00e9rosion en de nombreux endroits le long de nos c\u00f4tes.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9rosion c\u00f4ti\u00e8re continuera d\u2019avoir un impact sur les collectivit\u00e9s c\u00f4ti\u00e8res de la r\u00e9gion, et il convient d\u2019envisager toute une gamme d\u2019options d\u2019adaptation. De nombreuses collectivit\u00e9s c\u00f4ti\u00e8res seront confront\u00e9es \u00e0 la d\u00e9cision soit de prot\u00e9ger le littoral contre l\u2019\u00e9rosion par des approches techniques ou naturelles, soit de se retirer et de se relocaliser.<\/p>\n<p><b>Comment les impacts de l\u2019\u00e9rosion varient-ils par location ?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mat\u00e9riaux compacts et mat\u00e9riaux peu compacts :\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les mat\u00e9riaux plus compacts s&#8217;\u00e9rodent plus lentement et le processus d&#8217;\u00e9rosion est irr\u00e9versible, ce qui signifie qu&#8217;il ne peut pas \u00eatre restaur\u00e9.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les mat\u00e9riaux peu compacts s&#8217;\u00e9rodent rapidement, mais le processus peut \u00eatre r\u00e9versible et le site peut \u00eatre restaur\u00e9 si les mat\u00e9riaux ont la possibilit\u00e9 d&#8217;\u00eatre transport\u00e9s naturellement dans le syst\u00e8me ou s&#8217;ils sont r\u00e9introduits par l&#8217;activit\u00e9 humaine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c9rosion d&#8217;une pente en bas vs en haut :\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En bas : L&#8217;\u00e9rosion au bas d&#8217;une pente est caus\u00e9e par les vagues qui frappent la falaise et qui sapent le bas, affaiblissant ainsi la stabilit\u00e9 de la pente. Lorsque la pente devient instable, la partie sup\u00e9rieure de la pente peut s&#8217;effondrer dans l&#8217;eau en dessous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haut : L&#8217;\u00e9rosion au sommet est souvent caus\u00e9e par des \u00e9v\u00e9nements pluvieux importants. Lorsqu&#8217;une grande quantit\u00e9 d&#8217;eau s&#8217;\u00e9coule, elle peut entailler la pente au sommet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impacts des structures artificielles :\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les vagues d\u00e9placent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement les s\u00e9diments sur le rivage et au large (perpendiculairement \u00e0 la plage), et le long du littoral.\u00a0 Les infrastructures plac\u00e9es sur la c\u00f4te (par exemple, les quais, le blindage du littoral) peuvent interrompre ce mouvement naturel des s\u00e9diments.
