Indigenous-led Natural Climate Solutions (ILNCS) is a stream of the Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, a national effort by the Government of Canada to address climate change and biodiversity loss through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 5-7 megatons annually. $53.8 million in funding will be distributed over 10 years (as of 2021) to First Nations-led initiatives.
Funding will support Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations to 1) build capacity and 2) reduce emissions by completing boots-on-the-ground projects. Examples of eligible activities include ecological restoration, improved land management, and conservation projects that store carbon, benefit biodiversity, enhance climate resiliency, and improve human well-being. This funding supports climate adaptation by strengthening Indigenous capacity to handle climate impacts.
Funding can be requested for up to two fiscal years and there is no maximum eligible funding amount. The deadline to submit a proposal was October 3rd, 2024.
